Description

Among the rain-black roofs of Valbruk, Pale Vesper is known less by reputation than by the moment after danger passes.
Witnesses remember the quiet, the measured breath, and the sudden certainty that someone had already understood the room. As a changeling knight, he wears duty like armor, even when no herald remains to witness it. When trouble closes in, discipline and presence can hold a frightened line together.
Pale Vesper learned the foundations of the craft from an exile who never gave a true name, who demanded three answers before offering any lesson: who would benefit, who would pay the price, and what would remain when the excitement ended.
Many faces are available, but only a few are worn without purpose. That inheritance shaped his habits but never dictated them. Pale Vesper still believes an oath must protect people rather than institutions, and keeps a weathered oath-ring as a reminder of the first time good intentions proved insufficient.
The turning point came when a cabal of physicians who trade in memories arrived under legal seal and began removing people whose names had quietly vanished from the district rolls. Officials called it an accounting correction. Pale Vesper called it a hunt. He broke the first convoy before dawn, led seven prisoners through service tunnels beneath the ward, and left the empty wagon in the magistrate's courtyard. From that morning onward, every reward posted for his capture also became a warning to those who might otherwise have stood alone.
Recently, Pale Vesper uncovered a trail of blue wax beneath the city. The clue connects the old arrests to a chamber beneath the city where a forgotten agreement is still being enforced. Now the trail has narrowed to one dangerous purpose: learn who profited from the old disaster. Pale Vesper has accepted that the next door may close forever once crossed. Even so, the equipment is ready, the route is memorized, and one place beside the fire has been left empty for whoever returns.
