Description
Among the lantern quarter of Dun Aster, Nimble Quickwit is known less by reputation than by the moment after danger passes. Witnesses remember the quiet, the measured breath, and the sudden certainty that someone had already understood the room. As a gnome wizard, she treats magic as a question that deserves a precise and dangerous answer. When trouble closes in, prepared sigils can turn knowledge into force at exactly the needed moment.
Nimble Quickwit learned the foundations of the craft from an old smuggler who charged one secret per lesson, who demanded three answers before offering any lesson: who would benefit, who would pay the price, and what would remain when the excitement ended. Curiosity turns overlooked details into doors no one else can see. That inheritance shaped her habits but never dictated them. Nimble
Quickwit still has learned that the most costly spell is often the one left unread, and keeps a narrow strip of blue cloth as a reminder of the first time good intentions proved insufficient.
The turning point came when the brass-masked collectors arrived under legal seal and began removing people whose names had quietly vanished from the district rolls. Officials called it an accounting correction. Nimble Quickwit called it a hunt. She broke the first convoy before dawn, led seven prisoners through service tunnels beneath the ward, and left the empty wagon in the magistrate's courtyard. From that morning onward, every reward posted for her capture also became a warning to those who might otherwise have stood alone.
Recently, Nimble Quickwit uncovered a witness who remembers an officially forgotten night. The clue connects the old arrests to a chamber beneath the city where a forgotten agreement is still being enforced. Now the trail has narrowed to one dangerous purpose: keep a dangerous promise made to a dying friend. Nimble Quickwit has accepted that the next door may close forever once crossed. Even so, the equipment is ready, the route is memorized, and one place beside the fire has been left empty for whoever returns.
