Valda the Steadfast learned the foundations of the craft from an old smuggler who charged one secret per lesson, who demanded three answers before offering any lesson: who would benefit, who would pay the price, and what would remain when the excitement ended. Adaptability has become both survival skill and personal philosophy. That inheritance shaped her habits but never dictated them. The clue connects the old arrests to a chamber beneath the city where a forgotten agreement is still being enforced. Now the trail has narrowed to one dangerous purpose: recover a truth powerful people paid to bury. Valda the Steadfast has accepted that the next door may close forever once crossed. Even so, the equipment is ready, the route is memorized, and one place beside the fire has been left empty for whoever returns.
