Witnesses remember the quiet, the measured breath, and the sudden certainty that someone had already understood the room. As a kenku cleric, she carries faith as a duty measured in wounds closed and graves remembered. When trouble closes in, prayer can become shelter, judgment, or a light against the unquiet dead.
Cinder of Bells learned the foundations of the craft from a disgraced watch captain, who demanded three answers before offering any lesson: who would benefit, who would pay the price, and what would remain when the excitement ended.
Borrowed sounds are arranged into meanings that belong to no one else. That inheritance shaped her habits but never dictated them. Cinder of Bells still questions any temple that values doctrine above the frightened, and keeps a cracked brass compass as a reminder of the first time good intentions proved insufficient.
The turning point came when a cult that listens beneath locked floors arrived under legal seal and began removing people whose names had quietly vanished from the district rolls.
Officials called it an accounting correction. Cinder of Bells called it a hunt. She broke the first convoy before dawn, led seven prisoners through service tunnels beneath the ward, and left the empty wagon in the magistrate's courtyard. From that morning onward, every reward posted for her capture also became a warning to those who might otherwise have stood alone.
Recently, Cinder of Bells uncovered a door that appears only during heavy rain. The clue connects the old arrests to a chamber beneath the city where a forgotten agreement is still being enforced. Now the trail has narrowed to one dangerous purpose: recover a truth powerful people paid to bury. Cinder of Bells has accepted that the next door may close forever once crossed. Even so, the equipment is ready, the route is memorized, and one place beside the fire has been left empty for whoever returns.
