Pockle Nettlewick learned the foundations of the craft from an old smuggler who charged one secret per lesson, who demanded three answers before offering any lesson: who would benefit, who would pay the price, and what would remain when the excitement ended. She broke the first convoy before dawn, led seven prisoners through service tunnels beneath the ward, and left the empty wagon in the magistrate's courtyard. From that morning onward, every reward posted for her capture also became a warning to those who might otherwise have stood alone.
Recently, Pockle Nettlewick uncovered a list of names ending with their own. The clue connects the old arrests to a chamber beneath the city where a forgotten agreement is still being enforced. Now the trail has narrowed to one dangerous purpose: keep a dangerous promise made to a dying friend.
Pockle Nettlewick has accepted that the next door may close forever once crossed. Even so, the equipment is ready, the route is memorized, and one place beside the fire has been left empty for whoever returns.
