Muiren Dewstone learned the foundations of the craft from an exile who never gave a true name, who demanded three answers before offering any lesson: who would benefit, who would pay the price, and what would remain when the excitement ended. Strength is offered quietly, with no need for witnesses or ceremony. That inheritance shaped her habits but never dictated them. Recently, Muiren Dewstone uncovered a coded warning hidden in a tax register. The clue connects the old arrests to a chamber beneath the city where a forgotten agreement is still being enforced. Now the trail has narrowed to one dangerous purpose: bring the missing home. Muiren Dewstone has accepted that the next door may close forever once crossed.
Even so, the equipment is ready, the route is memorized, and one place beside the fire has been left empty for whoever returns.
